Another really good article from Microsoft at Work. How many times have you gone on vacation and struggled to figure out what to do with your work computer? If you are like me, you have meeting booked well in advance on your calendar, you have your standard voice mail greeting that might not be applicable, and the worst, you may have size limits on your email inbox that could potentially be exceeded (having the system administrator send you countless number of “you’ve exceeded the size limits for you inbox” emails…)

This is a good set of tips that can help you focus on getting ready to go on vacation while you are at work. It’s certainly not the first thing on your mind (where’s the door??!!), but following these will help you hit the ground running much quicker when you do get back.

Some highlights:

  1. Decline upcoming meetings (even those you’ve already accepted)
  2. Update your voicemail greeting
  3. Cleanup your inbox
  4. Let everyone know you are going to be out (by making sure your calendar is up to date)
  5. Check in any files that are checked out to you (especially for SharePoint or development environments)
  6. Secure your laptop (lock it up, etc.)
  7. Turn on your out-of-office message

I recommend visiting the site and reading the full article for more detailed information. Oh, and by the way, welcome back from the long weekend!
